The 6th Sunstar World Perio Research Award is…

We are thrilled with the high quality of the papers we have received to participate in the 6th World Perio Research Award focused on 'The relationship between Periodontal Disease and Systemic health'. After the proper selection made by distinguished dental journals, in the first place, and by the Award's Committee, in the second place, we are delighted to announce the winners of this edition. Besides, as the level of excellence of the papers has been very high this year, the Sunstar Foundation has agreed to award two articles with the 3rd place and recognise the excellent research that has been done by the scientists.

Since, 2003, this award aims to promote further research in the relationship that oral health has with systemic health and vice-versa to raise awareness about this issue around the world.

1st winner:
Title: Global Economic Impact of Dental Diseases.

This paper suggests that the global economic impact of dental diseases amounted to US$442 billion in 2010. Improvements in population oral health may imply substantial economic benefits not only regarding reduced treatment costs but also because of fewer productivity losses in the labour market.

2nd winner:
Title: Clinical, Immune, and Microbiome Traits of Gingivitis and Peri-implant Mucositis.

This research shows that there are differences between implants and tooth sites in microbiome evolution during OH abstention and the correlation of specific inflammatory mediators.

3rd winner:
Title: Global, Regional, and National Prevalence, Incidence, and Disability- Adjusted Life Years for Oral Conditions for 195 Countries, 1990–2015: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors.

This paper shows that oral diseases are highly prevalent on the globe and becoming a major health challenge. According to all the data recruited, the research also suggests that oral health goals, as well as new approaches to oral diseases, should be implemented.

3rd winner:

Awards:

All the winners have received a monetary reward as well as a full registration and lodging for Europerio9. Furthermore, the commemorative trophy was presented at the Award Ceremony during the Perio Link Night on 22nd June 2018 in Amsterdam.

Besides this prize, the Sunstar Foundation is proud of several other awards such as the Karring–Nyman Sunstar GUIDOR® Award, the Sunstar World Dental Hygienist award and the NEW Perio Link Award that aims to bring the scientific innovation closer to the people.
